Our Commitment to Reducing Waste
We all love receiving items in new, beautifully packaged bags. But at The Ballet Shop, we recognize the importance of reducing waste, as it has significant environmental implications.
The environment has always been close to our heart. Since opening 24 years ago, we’ve worked hard to minimize waste and ensure we are careful with packaging.
Packaging: A Necessary but Wasteful Step
Ballet shoes, sneakers, leotards, and jazz pants all come in individual packaging to protect them from environmental factors, particularly temperature changes and humidity. While this packaging serves a practical purpose, it also generates significant waste. For example, if you buy three items, that’s three bags – not to mention the shopping bag or the packaging used for postage.
We could order more packaging, but that would harm the environment. Instead, we choose to repurpose whenever possible.
Reusing Packaging for the Environment
If we ask for your product packaging when you leave the shop, it’s because we repurpose it. We use it for other items whose packaging has been damaged. If you don’t need your packaging, we encourage you to leave it behind so that we can give it a second life.
For posted items, we reuse packaging to insulate products from the rain. If an item’s original packaging is damaged, we might use a different bag or ask for your preference in packaging.
What Does Repackaged Mean?
If you receive a product in a bag that looks a little different or unusual, it’s likely because we’ve reused packaging. This helps reduce waste while still ensuring your items are safe. We will label these items as ‘Repackaged’ so you’ll know the difference.
Polythene bags can wear out with handling, humidity, and dust over time, so we often reuse bags or replace them with others that are still in good condition.
Why We Do It
We could buy more bags and replace them, but that would create more waste. We don’t want that. By reusing packaging, we reduce waste and help protect the environment. We’re committed to minimizing our environmental impact, and we hope you’ll support us in this effort by leaving behind your packaging when you’re done with it.
