Grooming and Discipline – at the Heart of Dance

When I was a little girl, I remember my first ballet mistress, Mrs Lilian Attard, telling me that a good chunk of the exam marks, in a ballet exam, was the grooming.  How you dressed, how your hair was groomed, the ribbons on your ballet shoes (yes, we had ribbons then)… The proper presentation is what makes the dancer attractive, young or older. The fairy-like quality cannot be achieved if the dancer’s hair is all over the place, or the Read More...

Back to school – autumn is here!

Schools in the performance / arts communities are reopening in Malta and this is such a relief. At The Ballet Shop, we have stocked up for all forms of dancewear for different forms of dance, but remember that if you have a uniform requirement for a particular school, Read More...

The Ballet Shop turns 21!

I recall, many years ago, it was approaching the end of term that I was discussing the cost of pointe shoes then and my then-partner said: “Why don’t you try importing your own?” This was before ebay, or any other form of market place, and internet sales (websites) had not even been thought of. So I started looking around, and sending enquiries, until I got a response from Sansha. My ballet teacher at the time, Nina Winter (Zammit) suggested that Sansha Read More...

COVID and the Arts

A year has passed since COVID has hit the island here in Malta. We followed suit after a number of countries did. The arts were among the biggest sectors to suffer – dance not being the least.  We’ve not only had theatres close, but dance and other performing arts schools were closed, alongside ‘contact sports’. Recent articles have attempted to justify the lack of business sense, giving little recognition to the artists’ needs to express themselves. So far, we have only Read More...

Etiquette – is it for dancers?

Etiquette also exists in dance. Proper dance training is disciplined, and respects others. Such as turning up well-groomed and on time, participating and behaving well during class and giving each other space for their moves as much as possible. Etiquette means respecting other people in the studio and in the changing room. It means that you are aware that others are also benefitting from the class – whether it is syllabus, rehearsal or open class.  People have invested time and Read More...
